Wendy Foulds Mathes, PhD

About Dr. Mathes

I aim to provide a safe environment, based on understanding, trust, and respect, to enable you to uncover your strengths and to empower you in your quest for positive change, growth, and life balance. I have experience supporting individuals through concerns related to depression, anxiety, eating disorders and body image, ADHD, academic and athletic performance, life transitions, career development, and stress management.

I hold a Master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling with a sub-specialty in sport psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a MS and PhD in experimental psychology from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.

I am a licensed professional counselor associate in the state of North Carolina and I am an active member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals, and the Association of Applied Sport Psychology.

Therapeutic Approach

I provide individual counseling using a non-judgmental approach based on empathy and unconditional positive regard. I believe that you are the expert on your life and I am here to help you identify your strengths, face your challenges, and empower you to take action to make changes to improve your quality of life. I often use skills and techniques from different psychological approaches to provide you with tools to create lasting change. I work with each of my clients individually to determine which approach will be most helpful to them.

Prior to becoming a mental health counselor, I studied how the brain can impact your mental health, behavior, and mood. I use this knowledge to understand how an individual’s biology, experience, and current environment can contribute to their challenges and their ability to overcome those challenges.

Community Education and Advocacy

I strongly believe that knowledge is power. I provide education to my clients, their families, and the community as a whole in an attempt to increase empathy and understanding about mental health. I have presented at local and national conferences, colleges and universities, and to community groups. I also work to educate law makers on Capitol Hill to inform public policy in support of mental health legislation in an effort to increase the availability of mental health care for all.
